Evaluation of Mercury Content on Dental Practice and Farmer Using Neutron Activation Analysis (Evaluasi Hasil Penentuan Merkuri dalam Praktek Kedokteran Gigi dan Pertanian Secara Analisis Pengaktifan Neutron)
The risk of mercury content in dental practices and famer was evaluated. Mercury content of 16 hair dentist and farmer were measured and compared to 7 samples as control from individual who have no direct exposure to mercury in their works. Mercury content was determined using neutron activation analysis. A nuclear reactor which has an average neutron flux of 1x1200cm-2s-1 was used as the neutron soutron source. The irradiation was done for 6 hours. The radioactivity of the samples was measured using a gamma spectrometer equiped with a Ge (li) detector and multihannel Analyzer of 4096 chanle. The combined 69 and 77 keV characterictic peaks of 197 hg was used as the basis of the quantitative determination. The arithemic means of mercury content in hair of dentist are 2.7329 plus/minus 1.5945 ppm, in hair of farmer are 0.4906 plus/minus 0.1506 ppm and in hair of control are 0.2904 plus/minus 0.1723 ppm. Compared to the control group, the dentist and the farmer were contaminated by mercury. However no symptoms of serious mercury in toxication was found.
