Molecular and Cellular Aspects of Mucosal Immunity (Aspek Molekular dan Selular Imunitas Mukosa)
Characteristic of mucosal immunity is the production of secretory IgA (SIgA) by local plasma cells at the mucosal tissues and secretory glands. The IgA secretion into luminal side is a complex process, involving various steps of molecular and cellular interactions among the immunocompetent cells. These comprise (1) initiation of mucosal responses in the gut lymphoid tissues (gut-associated lymphoid tissues, GALT) by luminal antigens, and (2) migration of sensitized IgA B cells and CD 4 T lymphosytes to the effector sites within the body in relation to the common mucosal immune system (CMIS). Discussions here are emphasized on the role of adhesion molecules (homing receptors and vascular addressins) such as LFA-1, VLA-4, ICAM-1, ICAM-2, VCAM-1 in the migration process of mucosal lymphocytes through HEV, uptake and processing of the dietary antigens, and mucosal immunopathology due to the impairment of luminal antigen processing.
