The Proportion of Smoking in a Barren Mountaneus Area, East Java (Proporsi Merokok di Pegunungan Tandus Jawa Timur)
Cardiovascular epidemilogic study with stratified random sampling was carried-out at Kampak, a barren mountaneus area at the southern part of east Java to research smoking prevalence. Sample consisted 341 peoples, 177 (51.9 percent) men and 164 (48.1 percent) women; age between 20-84 years, mean 84.16 plus/minus 13.38 years. Smoking was found on 156 (45.7 percent) women. Mean of smoking was 4.17 plus/minus 3.31 Cigars/day. The mean of age begining to smoke was 30.64 plus/minus 12.45 years. The average length of smoking was 22.65 plus/minus 15.00 years. On 36 peoples where data on type of cigar available, 28 (77.78 percent) peoples smoked home-made cigars (klobot). There was a trend toward increase in the prevalence of smoking with age, but no correlation was found between smoking and relative body weight.
