Gingival Enlargement caused by Nifedipine Therapy (Pembesaran Gingiva Akibat Penggunaan Nifedipine)
Nifedipine is a drug comonly used for the treatment of coronary heart disease and many other cardiac disorders. This drug inhibits the calcium ion from entering the cell membrane and smooth muscle by way of calcium channel, resulting in negative inotropic, negative chronotropic, and lowering the AV conduction. The highest incidence of its side effect is an excessive vasodilation which has been reported is gingival enlargement and bleeding. This side effect will disappear when the drug is discontinued. The mechanism of gingival enlargement is still not clear; however, there are several speculations among which is the inhibition of collagenase by nifedipine.
