Study of Sexual Transmitted Disease and HIV/AIDS on Family Planning Center Patients at 4 Community Health Centers in Jakarta and West Java during 1995 (Studi PMS Termasuk HIV/AIDS pada Ibu Pengunjung BP/KIA/KB di 4 Puskesmas DKI dan Jawa Barat, 1995)
Currently a model of integrating STD services into the existing ambulatory/Mother and Child Health (MC)/family planning (FP) services in the Puskesmas (Public Health Center) is unavailable. The objectives of this study is to develop an intervention model in reducing the risk of STDs including HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis B infection for low income MWRA (Married of Reproductive Age) through integrating STD services into MCH/FP services in the four Puskesmas both in the urban and rural areas. A survey of knowledge, attitude and practice (KAP) was conducted among 400 MWRA visiting the Puskesmas who were randomly selected. In addition, screening for selected STDs used wet-mount, Gra staining technique and ELISA test were performed among 1200 MWRA visiting the Puskesmas. The results of the laboratory screening showed rate of STD infection was between 40-60 percent among the MWRA and no HIV positive was found. STD infection is apparently a common problem among MWRA visiting Puskesmas both in the urban and rural areas. The knowledge and skills of the health personnel of the Puskesmas in management and prevention of STDs are still insufficient. An apropriate and urgent intervention are needed to train the health personnel of the Puskesmas on the management and prevention of STDs including HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis B. In addition, Health education concerning the same subject is essential for the MWRA visiting the Puskesmas.
