Cow's Milk and Food in Infants and (Alergi Susu Sapi dan Makanan pada Bayi dan Anak)

Adverse reactions to foods may be in the formal of 'food allergy', food hypersensitivity 'and' food intolerance. Several factors including immunology, mucosal barrier of the gastrointestinal tract, genetic and exposure to allergen play an important role in the pathophysiology of food allergy. Food allergen is protein or glycoprotein or polypeptide with the molecular weight of more than 18,000 dalton, heat resistant and proteolytic enzyme resistant. There are four important fraction in i.e. beta lactoglobuline (BLG) alfa lacto globulin (ALA) bovine serum albumine (BSA) and bovine gama globuline. Among these fractions, BLG is the most potent allergen because of heat resistent. Cow's milk allergy in infants may become tolerant in . Whether an infant may become tolerant in childhood. Whether an infant become tolerant or persistly allergic later in childhood depends on which T helper is actifated. If T helper-2 (Th-2) is actifated, the result will be tolerant on the other hand, if T helper-1 (Th-1) is actifated, the result is persistly allergic. Other foods allergy such a peanut, soybean, egg, fish and fruits can occur in childhood. The clinical symptoms of cow's milk and food allergy in infants and children including gastrointestinal, respiratory tract, skin and cardiovascular manifestations. The diagnosis of food allergy is established by history, physical examination, laboratory examination and elimination and provocation test. The mainstay treatment of food allergy is elimination of the offending food. The prognosis is better in children under 3 year because there is a possibility of immune tolerance.
