Aktivitas Antimikroba Daun Ketapang Kencana (Terminalia muelleri Benth) ( Antimicrobial Activity of Terminalia muelleri Benth. Leaves)
Terminalia muelleri Bench is a species of family Combretaceae. This family is widely used in traditional medicine to treat bacterial, fungal infections. However, traditional use of T. muelleri is not know up to now, as well as, its pharmacological activities. It is important to test extract of T. muelleri against several microbes. Extraction of leaf of T. muelleri using solvents of increasing polarity namely, n-hexane, ethyl acetate and methanol respectively, yieled dry extracts . The extracts were tested for antifungal and antibacterial activity. Extarcts of the leaf of T. muelleri exhibited antibacterial activity against standard strains of Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923 and Escherichia coli ATCC 25922 and the fungi, candida albicans ATCC 10231. Ethyl extract exhibited the strongest activity against both bacteria and fungi. This extract had MIC 0.1 µg/ml; 0.1 µg/ml against S. aureus, E coli, and C. alcicans respectively. Acitivity of 100 µg ethyl acetate equal to 0.071 µg and 0.426 µg tetracycline HCI against S. aureus, E. coli, respectively, and 0.00027 µg ketoconazole against C. allbicans The extract proved broad spectrum of activity against Gram positive bacteria i.e. S aureus,Gram negative bacteria i.e. E. coli and fungi i.e. C. albicans.
