The Effect of Calcitriol in the Therapy of Metabolic Bone Disease (Peran Kalsitriol pada Terapi Penyakit Metabolik Tulang)
Osteoporosis is a metabolic bone disease where bone resorption rate exceeds bone formation, resulting in reduced bone and thus easier to become fractured. Management of osteoporosis consist of general and specific therapy. General therapy include sample intake of food containing protein, calcium and vitamine D. Specific therapy varies depending on the etiology. Some substances that could be used are estrogen, calcitriol, calcitonin, calcium and vitamine D. Calcitriol is effective in treating osteoporosis by reducing loss of bone mass and incidence of fractures. Calcitriol stimulates the absorbtion of calcium. Hormon replacement therapy and calcitriol could be given for long term treatment of post menopausal osteoporosis.
