Comparison between 2.5-5 mg Cilazapril and 50-100 mg Atenolol Daily in Patients with Mild to Moderate Essential Hypertension : A Double Blind Study
To compare the effects of cilazapri and atenolol on lowering blood pressure and side effects in patients with hypertension, a theree months randomized double blind trial has been done with a total of 80 patients. The results showed that cilazapril with the dose of 2.5 to 5 to 5 mg daily has been proven as equally effective as 50-100 mg atenolol daily. Cilazapril has no effect on glucose and lipid metabolism as well as on renal and liver functions. Cilazapril is superior to atenollol in regard to changes in cardiothoracic ratio which might be caused by cardiovascular remodelling effect on heart muscle. No side effects namely dry cough, palpitation or sleep disturbance were noted. However, one cilazapril patient had minimal headache in the 4th week of treatment and 2 atenolol patients had cold extremities.
