The Management of Malaria through the Community Participation in Berakit Riau Kepulauan (Penanggulangan Penyakit Malaria melalui Peran Serta Masyarakat di Berakit Riau Kepulauan)
The massive problem of malaria in Berakit can be observed from the first year research report of 1982/1983 i.e. the parasite number 27.1-33.3 percent and spleen number 52.5-56.0 percent. The main parasite found was Plasmodium vivax and the potential malaria was Anopheles sundaicus. An intervention was conducted by giving malaria guidance books to the people there. This effort brought a better understanding on the malaria infector. Before the intervention the disease had been known as a destiny given by God, cause of evil spirits, but after the intervention the people knew that the disease was caused by mosquitos. They also knew the symptoms of malaria. Before the intervention they assumed the best ways to handle the disease were by taking pils of which it had the picture of mosquitos, working hard until they got sweat, or burning out mosquitos incense. After the intervention they knew that they had to avoid mosquitos stung and to take malaria pills. The social fund which was given by a research team and managed by malaria initiators was aimed to overcome variety of malaria diseases. The form of social fund was followed by one of the social community groups at the observed area. The action taken by initiators were by giving guidences from malaria guidence books, distributing malaria pills, suggesting people to go to 'Puskesmas' (Community Health Center) if one of their family members got sick. All those actions were the realization of people's role in overcoming malaria.
