Keberhasilan Pelatihan Manajeen Asfiksia Bayi Baru Lahir untuk Bidan di Desa di Kabupaten Cirebon, Tahun 2005 ( The Accomplishment of New Born Asphyxia Management Training for Rural Midwives at Cirebon District, Year 2005)

The Ministry of Health, together with Health Office of Cirebon District, Program of Appropriate Technology in Health (PATH), and Save te Children carried out newborn asphyxia management training program for all rural midwives for 6 months in 2004. Before and after the intervention, baseline and evaluation survey were carried out respectively with 1.5 year lapse to evaluate the degree of the achievement, judged from a decline in the asphyxia early neonatal death rate. The study design was a cross sectional one, applied to mothers whose newly born babies had died at the age of 0-28 days, including stillbirth, which occurred within one year period prior to both surveys. Sample was tested through different proportion of hypothesis, with the assumption that the asphyxia proportion decreased 50%, from (pI) 30%-40% before and (p2) 15-20% after the intervention. The number of samples was 215 and 264 cases for the baseline and evaluation survey. Data was complied using VA questionnaire, and the cause of death was classified according to ICD-10 and Wiggles worth. The neonatal mortality rate (NMR) decreased significantly, i.e. from 12.6 per 1,000 live births to 8.6 per 1,000 live births. Then, the asphyxia early neonatal death rate decreased significantly, i.e. from 5.1 to 2.7per 1,000 live births in year 2004-2005. The training also improved health service for mothers and newborns, such as the increasing number of deliveries assisted by professional providers from 59% to 72%, and the increase, such as the increasing number of deliveries assisted by professional providers from 59% to 72%, and the increase of neonatal visits from 31% to 50%. Asphyxia management training program was successful and should be maintained continuously through refreshing programs for the rural midwives.
