Shallot (Allium ascalonicum L.) Protection against CCI4 Intoxication in Rats (Daya Proteksi Bawang Merah (Allium ascolonicum L.) terhadap Keracunan CCI4 pada Tikus)
It has been demonstrated that garlic (Allium Sativum L.) and welsh onion (Allium fistulosum L.) could prevent liver damaged in rats intoxicated with CCI4. It should be very interested to know, whether as garlic and welsh onion. A number of rats were divided randomly into three groups of six animals. The first group, receiving no treatment, was the normal control group. The second group was intoxicated with a single dose of 0.55 mg CCI4/g body weight. The third group recieved water extract of shallot. equivalent to 20 g shallot body weight daily, for 8 days successively. Two hours after the last administration of shallot water extract, animals were intoxicated with an equal dose of CCI4. All groups received a standard diet and libitum. Forty eight hours after the administration of CCI4, the rats were sacrified. GPT activity and the level of-SH group containing compounds were determined in plasma. The content of-SH group containing substances was also determined in liver homogenates. We observed that plasma GPT activity was significantly higher, whereas the plasma level of-SH group containing substances, as well as its content in the liver homogenates, were significantly lower in the second group. It is suggessted that CCI4 intoxication, leading to in increase plasma GPT activity and to deplete the-SH group containing in plasma and liver, could be prevented by shallot extract.
