Leek (Allium fistulosum Linn) and Metabolisme : Effect on Plasma Lipid Peroxide Levels in CCI4 Intoxicated Rats (Bawang Prei (Allium fistulosum Linn.) dan Metabolisme : Pengaruh terhadap Kadar Peroksida Lipid Plasma Tikus yang Diracuni dengan CCI4 L)
We have demonstrated previously the ability of leek in preventing rats liver against free radicals injuries generated by CCI4 intoxication. The liver lipid peroxide contents, which increased markedly in CCI4 intoxication, decreased to the concentration pratically identic to its normal values in rats pretreated with leek water extract and followed by CCI4 administration. This report describes the effects of leek administration on the plasma lipid peroxide levels in CCI4 intoxicated rats. Contrary to the liver lipid peroxide profiles, we observed a decrease in plasma lipid peroxide levels in CCI4 intoxicated rats. The levels increased near its normal values, when the animals were pretreated with leek water extract. Some mechanism were considered to explain the paradox. But, what so ever the mechanism migh be, it seems that leek could always exert its hepatoprotective property. It is concluded that leek contained substance (so which could restore the function/mechanism of bio sinthesis and secrection of PUFA in rat liver, seriously damaged by CCI4 intoxication.
