HELLP Syndrome (Sindroma HELLP)

HELLP (hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes and and low platelets) syndrome is multisystem diseases from of preeclampsia/eclampsia marked by microangiopathic hemolytic anemia, heapetic dysfunction and thrombocytopenia. The teminology and diagnostic criteria used to describe this syndrome have been confusing and inconsistent. The etiology of the HELLP syndrome in preeclampsia is poorly understood, therefore used to treat this syndrome are supportive. Most of the therapeutic modalities used to treat this syndrome are similar to those used in the management of severe preeclampsia. Severe complications of HELLP syndrome such as disseminated intravascular coagulation, pulmonary adema, acute renal failure and hepatic rupture are life threatening. This complications result in poor maternal and fetal outcome. Thus, it is advisable that patients with HELLP syndrome be referred to tertiary care center with maternal and neonatal intensive care facilities.
