The Role of Prostate Specific Antigen in Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy (Peranan Pemeriksaan Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) pada Hipertrofi Prostat Jinak/HPJ)
Prostate specific antigen (PSA) is an enzyme produced by epithelial prostatic cells. Although the enzyme is specific for prostatic cells, its usage to differentiate benign prostatic hypertrophy from prostatecencer has not been proven yet. A serial case study of 5 cases with PSA examinations is reported. Two cases of total urine retention had PSA levels determined after digital rectal examination and after a catheter was introduced. Three cases of prostatism had PSA level examined before undergoing digital rectal examination and other procedures. The results indicate that PSA values are best examined prior to invasive procedures and that the method should be interpreted as a means of supportive diagnostic method for digital rectal examination and transrectal ultrasonography.
