The Effect of Acupunture on Clinical Symptoms of Autistic Spectrum Disorder
The prevalence of autistic spectrum disorder increases more as the time goes by. One of caused by the biochemical factors such as serotonin, a neurotransmitter in our brain. The serotonin production, absorbtion and metabolism are different in autistic children than those who are not autistic. Acupuncture needle producing nervous impulses that help releasing monoamine neurotransmitter serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine in the spinal cord. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of acupuncture to decrease the clinical symptoms of autistic spectrum patients. The study design for this research is analytical descriptive retrospective. The research was carried out in Arogya Mitra, Dukuh Ngemplak, Kalikotes, Kabupaten Klaten, Jawa Tengah from the month of February till May 2007. A total of 36 patients with minimum age 4 years-old and the maximum age 24 years-old. First improvement of therapy can be happened in the first two month after acupuncture therapy, which was mean of first improvement was 2.75 (SD 1.500). About 29 parents (80.6%) of autistic children felt a significant improvement and 31 parents (86.1 %) felt satisfied with the acupuncture therapy. There was a very highly significant difference between CARS before and after therapy. Conclusion: Although there is improving of clinical symptoms after acupuncture therapy in autistic patients, however it needs another research such as prospective observational and also needs the next research which is a clinical trial to know the effect of acupuncture to symptoms of autistic spectrum disorder
