High Incidence of phlebitis in Rumah sakit Sidoarjo and Lack of understanding in the installation of kanule in intravenous therapy among health workers have encouraged the initiation of this study, which which was concentrated on IV therapy, especially installation of kanule, followed by cases of phlebitis. The study was focused on evidences of phlebitis relating to the installation of kanule on arm and hand veins during IV theraphy. The study was aimed at describing the associated cases (descriptive case study). Allpatients subjected to kanule instalation in Agust 2006 wereconsidered as the population under study, totalling a number of 116 patients. Samples to be investigated were selected by consecutive sampling techniue resulted in a number of 24 patients. Variables to be investigated included the location for kanule installation during IV therapy andevidences of phlebitis. Data were collected by performing observations, followed by presentation of data in tables and descriptive analyses. The study discovered that only small portion of patients with kanule installed in their vena sefalika and basilica suffered from phlebtitis (8,33%) and 25% of the patients did not suffer from it. Twenty five percents (25%) of patients with their kanule installed in vena asesoris experienced phlebitis, while only small portions of patients were free from phlebitis (8m33%). The rest of the patients, having their kanule installed in vena metacarpal did not suffer from phlebtis at all. The study conduded that incidence of phlebitis associated with installation of kanule.during intravenous therapy depends on the location of kanule installation. The study recommends that shoukd exercise careful site selection prior to installation of kanule.
