ssosiation Between Caregiver Burden of chizophren Patient with Positive and Negative Symptoms of Positive and Negative Symptom Scale For Schizophrenia (PANSS)

For the families of individuals with schizophrenia, the illness can likewise be perplexing and burdensome. Understanding which symptoms are most problematic may be critical to helping families cope more effectively with mental illness. This study was aimed to examine association between caregiver burden and the positive and negative symptoms of Positive and Negative Symptom Scale for Schizophrenia (PANSS) of the patient, and in which score the symptom began influenced the burden. The study was a cross-sectionally analytic-descriptive design and technical sampling was consecutive admission, conducted to the family who accompanied a schizophrenic patient visited psychiatric outpatient clinic at Hasan Sadikin Hospital Bandung from July to August 2006. The patients were examined using PANSS, whereas his or her family were asked to complete Caregiver Burden Questionnaire. Correlation test was conducted to know the association between scores of these two measures. To know the score of PANSS that began influence the burden was conducted Unpaired t-test. There were significant associations between caregiver burden and P3 (hallucinatory behavior; r= 0.364, p=0.044) and P4 (excitement; r= 0.496, p=0.005) of positive symptoms. As well as, there were significant associations between caregiver burden and N 1 (blunted affect; r= 0.413, p=0.021); N2 (emotional with drawl, r= 0.494, p=0.005), N6 (lack of spontaneity and flow of conversation; r= 0.381, p=0.035) and N7 (stereotyped thinking; r=0.417, p=0.02) of negative symptoms. For all symptoms, the severity of symptoms began influenced burden score if the PANSS score was ≥3 except N6 item, that began influenced burden at two. The conclusion of this study that patient's symptoms, both positive and negative symptoms, are associated with the severity of burden perceived by caregiver. The higher PANSS score of the symptom, more severe burden perceived by caregiver.
