Vibrio Cholerae 0139 Bengal : The New Serogroup Related to a Large Epidemic of Diarrhea (Vibrio Cholerae 0139 Bengal : Galur Baru yang Berkaitan dengan Wabah Diare yang Luas)
In the late 1992, a large epidemic of cholera-like disease due to a novel strain belongs to the non-01 serogroup of Vibrio cholerae broke out in the Southern Indian port city of Madras. The disease affected thousands of individuals, mainly adults, and caused many deaths in the sub continent. The epidemic strain was not related to the 137 known non-01 serogroups; therefore, a new serogroup, 0139, was assigned to the strain with synonym Bengal to indicate its first isolation from the coastal areas of the Bay of Bengal. Morphologically, culturally, and biochemically, this new strain is similar to V. cholerae 01 biotype El Tor. Since the first outbreak in India, the disease has been spreading into the neighboring countries and far beyond, raising concerns that this new strain might be potential of causing the eight pademic.
