The Potency of Anopheles hyrcanus Group as Malaria Vector in Teluk Dalam, Nias (Anopheles hyrcanus Group dan Potensinya sebagai Vektor Malaria, di Kecamatan Teluk Dalam Nias)
A two-year study was conducted starting on May 1992, to observe the seasonal fluctuation, biting activity and the potency of An. hyrcanus spesies group as malaria vector in Teluk Dalam District, Nias Island, North Sumatera province. Regular standard collecting methods such as night landing and morning collections - indoor and outdoor, revealed 4 species of An. hyrcanus group, e.g. An.sinensis, An. crawfordi, An. nigerrimus and An. peditaeniatus. The peak biting activity occured at 20.00 to 21.00 hours, decreasing gradually until morning. The An. hyrcanus group had the highest dominance rate and vectorial capacity among Anopheles revealed in the study areas, respectively between 4,016.25 - 8,492.31 and 0.67 - 2.73. Seasonal density of the An. hyrcanus species group and An. sundaicus supports the prevalence of malaria cases in Teluk Dalam Village, which occurs throughout the year. No sporozoites found through the conventional salivary gland dissecting method on 1,347 Anopheles spp. Further investigations will be conducted using the ELISA test to confirm the vector.
