Clinical Filariasis caused by Nonperiodic Brugia malayi on Dayak People in Eastern Kalimantan (Filariasis Klinis yang Disebabkan oleh Brugia malayi Nonperiodik pada Penduduk Asli Dayak di Kalimantan Timur)
A new subspecies of human parasite filarial worm, i.e. nonperiodic from of Brugia malayi Lichrenstein, was reported from East Kalimantan. Based on the morphology, physiology or behavior, the Brugia type revealed very closely related to the animal parasite filarial worm of Brugia pahangi. This paper reports the results of further observations on other properties of filaria parasite, i.e clinical manifestations found among Dayak people, the indigenous inhabitants of Krayan Area, Long Ikis District, Pasir Regency. Filariasis caused by this Brugia type showed severe or frequent clinical manifestations, particularly as filarial attack at the acute stage of the disease. This showed incompatibilities of host-parasite relationship, as happening in animal filarial parasite infection in man. Two hundred eighteen out of 733 peoples were examined, and 29.7 percent suffered from clinical manifestations, among which 201 cases (27.4 percent) were in acute stage, and 17 cases (2.3 percent) in the chronic stage with lymphedema or elephantiasis. One hundred ninety five out of 201 cases of lymphadenitis were found during filaria attack, 95.5 percent affected inguinal or popliteal lymphnodes only. Among 17 cases at the chronic stage, there were 7 cases (41.2 percent) with one leg elephantiasis and 7 cases (41.2 percent) with both two legs elephantiasis.
