The Pathogenical Intestinal Protozoa in Diarrheal Children on Several Nutritional Status (Protozoa Usus Patogen yang Ditemukan pada Anak Diare dengan Berbagai Status Gizi)
Objective: To find out the epidemiologic data of pathogenic intestinal protozoa in diarrheal children and to see the clinical features of pathogenic intestinal protozoa infection in various nutritional status. This study was also aimed to see the relationship between pathogenic intestinal protozoa infections and nutritional status. Method: This study was carried out in dr. Syaiful Anwar Teaching Hospital, Malang Indonesia, from July 1993. There were 332 diarrheal children in this study, its from 0 to 14 years old. Fresh stool samples were examined by direct smears, concentration technique by the Ritchi's method, modified Cold Kinyoun acid fast staining. Result: Entamoeba histolytica infection were identified in 25 children (7.5 percent), crytosporidium parvum in 9 children (2.7 percent), Giardia lamblia in 4 children (1.2 percent), Blastocystis hominis in 2 children (0.6 percent) and Isospora belli in 1 child (0.3 percent). Malnutrition was the mean factor in pathogenic intestinal protozoan infection (p value less than 0.05), actually in Entamoeba histolytica infection and Cryptosporidium parvum infection. The clinical features of amebiasis associated diarrhea varied from mild (10 cases) to severe (15 cases) dehydration. Most of the case had bloody and mucus stools, except 3 cases. The duration of diarrheal symptoms average 4,5 days. The clinical features of Cryptosporidiasis varied from mild (4 cases) to severe dehydration (5 cases). 6 from 9 cases had watery stools and 3 had mucus stools, the duration of diarrheal symptoms average 4.1 cases. Most of the cases of giardiasis associated diarrhea was mild dehydration, only 1 had severe dehydration. All of the case had watery stool and the duration average 4.2 days. Conclusion: Malnutrition was influenced the severity of dehydration in pathogenic intestinal protozoan infection (p value less than 0.05).
