The Prevalence of Endemic Goiter in Indonesia (Prevalensi Penderita Gondok Endemik di Indonesia)
Endemic goiter implies an etiologic factors or factors common to a particular region. The term has been edited as the presence of thyroid anlargement in more than 10 percent of the population. Since the enlargement can exist in many diversity of etiology, a term such as simple or non-toxic goiter is better employed. However, most likely that depletion of glandular organic iodine in a certain amount and in a long time period is the cause of the enlargement. This paper describes the epidemiology of simple goiter in Indonesia, its geographical distribution and approaches to prevention.
