Working Status and the Income of the Mother and its Relation with Nutritional Food Quality in Urban Areas (Status Pekerjaan Ibu dan Pendapatan dalam Hubungannya dengan Mutu Gizi Makanan Keluarga di Daerah Perkotaan)
This study aimed at assessing nutrional quality of the family diet in relation to maternal employment status and family income. The data used for this study (n=3416 families) are a part of the extended National Socio-economic Survey (SUSENAS), collected in February 1990 in Medan, Palembang, Bandung, Semarang and Surabaya. Maternal employment status was classified into three groups namely non-working mother, working mother without housekeeper and working mother with housekeeper. Nutritional quality of the diet (NQ) was calculated based on mean nutrient adequacy of ten nutritional quality of the diet (NQ) was calculated based on mean nutrient adequacy of ten nutrients. The conversion from food quantites of seven-days recall to nutrients was based on food composition tables. Results from a multiple regression model showed that maternal employement status, family income, family size, father's and mother's education level, exposure to mass media were significantly associated with NQ. Holding other variables constant, the NQ of family with working mother with housekeeper was higher than the NQ of family with non-working mother or family with working mother without housekeeper. The NQ of family with working mother without housekeeper was not different from the NQ of family with non-working mother.
