Crowding and Health in Low-Income Settlements : A Case Study in Jakarta (Crowding and Health in Low-Income Settlements Studi Kasus di Jakarta)
In the developing countries, the impact of overcrowded population to health have not been given much attention yet. Therefore, literature study and field survey was conducted, for example the basic two ways corelation of overcrowding in the house and health in the rural area, and low icome settlements. A longitudinal prospective based study which cover about 25,000 citizens of Kali Anyar in Jakarta was also conducted. For the statistical analysis, a meaningful overcrowded indicator which has a bad impact for health such as diarrhea, respiratory tract diseases (fever/cough) and the weight of a newborn child was used. None of the overcrowded indicator became a meaningful risk factor for the weight of a newborn child. On the contrary, overcrowding parameters like the quantity of persons in one room, quantity of child below 5 years in one space and the floor width (in m2) per person/per child under 5 years in the house are the meaningful risk factors for diarrhea and respiratory tract diseases.
