Bioavaibillity of Iron in Tempe on Pregnant Woman (Bioavailabillitas Zat Besi Tempe pada Wanita Hamil)
Objective: To know whether soybean tempe supplement to pregnant woman's diet has positive influence in absorbtion and metabolism of iron. Setting: Hasan Sadikin Hospital, Bandung, Indonesia. Material and methods: The study was carried out in pregnant woman between 14-24 weeks of gestation fulfilled the criteria and was divided into two groups. Study group that given tempe in their diet and the other as a control group had not been given tempe in their diet and the other as a control group had not been given tempe during this study. Before the study an observation of hemoglobin, hematocrit, number of erythrocyt, iron serum, transferin and TIBC was done. The same observation was repeated in the 5th week of the study. Forty samples pergroup were taken in permutation block random. Each data of the group was performed descriptively while the analysis was done with compativariable was statistically tested with t test and chi square. Results: Improvement of hemoglobin, hematocrit, iron serum and TIBC for the first group was found better than the control group. The decrease number of erythrocyt and transferin was found more in control group. Statistically significant difference was found in change of hemoglobin and hematocrit. Conclusions: From the study it is most possible to say that iron ion together with tempe give better influence compared with iron ion suplement only in improving hemoglobin and hematocrit. It seems that biovailability of ion in tempe is really take a role in improving hemoglobin and hematocrit in pregnant woman.
