Clinical and Radiological Appearance, and Immunological Status in Children with Sinusitis (Gambaran Klinis dan Radiologis serta Status Imunologis pada Anak dengan Sinusitis)
Diagnosing sinusitis in children up to now is still a problem because of the untypical clinical manifestations, therefore it is often difficult to differentiate with other upper respiratory infections. Physical examination revealed very rare typical disorder. With several limitations radiological assessment of paranasal sinuses is one of the important diagnostic method to confirm the occurance of sinusitis. Predisposing factors of sinusitis in children must be taken into consideration before making the diagnosis and deciding the management of sinusitis in children. A descriptive study was conduct to know how the characteristics of clinical manifestations are, depicting the relations among several predisposing factors in patients with sinusitis. The study was performed in any patients of the Department of Child Health Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital, from January, 1987 until December, 1989. The secondary data were achieved from 3 to 14 years old new patients with complete decumentation of the illness, physical examination and laboratory examination including immunoglobulin concentration and radiological result of paranasal sinuses. There were 128 patients with sinusitis, of whom only 59 net the inclusive criteria for evaluation. Boys were found more than girls. Most of the patients were between 3 and 8 years old. The most common symptoms were cough with caruza. Radiological findings showed that cloudy appearance especially in the maxillary sinuses is prominent. This study differed from others where almost of our patients were in good nutrition status. From 37 patients, 30 showed increased in concentration of the IgE. The role of immunodeficiency in causing sinusitis is still inconclusive, since IgE2 concentration is not measured on this patients group.
