Transmission of Malaria in Manado (Transmisi Lokal Malaria di Kodya Manado Local)
A study had been done in the city of Manado to indentify the possibility of existance of local malaria transmission in 1993-1994. This study had been carried out in collaboration between the Communicable Disease Research Centre, NIHRD with Faculty of Medicine UNSRAT, NAMRU-2 and Local Health Services. The results showed that local transmission occured in Meras/Tuminting village's coastal area and Tingkulu/Teling Atas village, an island area of Manado. Sporozoit indentification by ELISA testing showed that the malaria vectors for the coastal area were An. subpictus and An. barbirostiris. Their breeding sites were abandoned fish ponds. While for the island area, An. parangensis was found positive. This is the first report on An. parangensis as vector for malaria. Further studies on this species should be done such as vector potency and vector bionomics.
