Plasma Fibrinogen and Antithrombin-III Levels among NIDDM Patients
Fibrinogen and antithrombin-II (ATIII) are the two components of hypercoagulable states. It has been known that Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is associated with alteration of hypercoagulable states secondary. To study the fibrinogen and ATIII levels in NIDDM patients, factors influencing is abnormalities and the cerrection with retinopathy a cross sectional study among 30 NIDDM patients at Diabetes Outpatient Clinic Denpasar General Hospital, have been conducted. Increased of fibrinogen level was found in 53 percent (16/30) among NIDDM patients, while none out of 15 normal subjects. Mean of fibrinogen levels among NIDDM patients was higher significantly than in normal subjects, were 528.5 mg/dl and 169.1 mg/dl, respectively. Decreased of ATII levels were found in 20 percent (6/30) and 46 percent (7/15) among NIDDM patients and normal subject, respectively. The level of ATIII among NIDDM was higher significantly than those in normal subjects (108.5 percent vs.73.7 percent). Eight out 30 NIDDM patients had retinophathy complication. Based on this study, it could be concluded that levels of fibrinogen and ATIII were higher significantly in NIDDM patients than in normal subject. 53 percent of NIDDM patients showed increased of fibrinogen level, and 20 percent of NIDDM patients showed decreased of fibrinogen level, and 20 percent of them showed decreased of ATIII level. Retinopathy was not associated with fibrinogen and ATII levels in this study. Further study is needed to search the causes of fibrinogen and ATIII levels abnormalities in NIDDM patients, because both of them have an important role in vascular damage (thromboembolism.)
