Women Perception through the Incidence of Goiter in Srubung, Magelang, Central Java (Persepsi Wanita Berusia 20-35 tahun terhadap Kejadian Penyakit Gondok di Kecamatan Srubung, Kabupaten Magelang Jawa Tengah)
The significant role of nutrition status of women in the reproductive period put forth nutrition as an important aspect of womens health. Iodine deficiency is one of the important health problems faced by communities in certain parts of Indonesia. The deficiency is not only causes goiter, but also leads into psychomotor and neuromotor disturbances and may be responsible for abortions, infant deaths, perinatal mortality, and so on, which eventually affects the quality of human resources. The purpose of this study is to investigate the perception on goiter. The design study was fields research. The study took place in Srumbung Sub District, Magelang Region, Jawa Tengah Province. The subjects of the study were 20-35 years old women, selected to participate in the study through a purposive sampling. Partipative observations, indepth interviews, and facus group discussions were carried out to obtain qualitative data. The results of the study indicated that the perception on goiter was usually incorect according to the current biomedical state of knowledge. The respondents tend to regard goiter not as a diseases, because it does no harm and is not fatal. This misleading perception prevents them from adopting practices to over come iodine deficiency.
