The literature related to the effects of tobacco smoking on the oral cavity is reviewed. In this paper, the review is restricted only to the effects of smoking on oral mucosa, oral bacteria, oral hygiene and periodontium. The elucidation of those effects is presented where the characteristics of tobacco component are expounded previously. The other effects have been well described elsewhere and beyond the scope of this literature review.
